Collection: Gyotaku Fish Prints

Gyotaku is a traditional way that Japanese fisherman record their catch. It's several hundred years old and has become popular with other fisherman as well. I am neither Japanese nor a fisherman, but I am a sculptor. I had created a 7' high x 24' long sculpture of a fish for a seafood restaurant. I had repainted the surface twice over many years, and once again, it was due for a new look. 

My client had been collecting original prints by a California fisherman and artist for many years. This inspired me to learn about the technique which I found fascinating. While most prints are in traditional black Sumi ink, I wanted color.

These prints are left over from that installation and are now available for sale. I've used both Sumi ink and contemporary acrylic inks on Japanese rice papers of different textures. Yes, the fish were fresh, and because the ink is washable, the fish were still edible.
